Dibden Bay

-
Located in Southampton, on the English south coast.
-
The port dealt mainly with containerised cargo and cruise-ship passenger.
-
It's the country’s leading container port.
-
In 2000, it became clear the capacity needed expanding to meet competition from European ports.
-
The Associated British Ports(ABP) had no space for expansion on the Southampton side of the Test estuary.
-
A large land had been reclaimed for the expansion during 1950s and 1960s.
-
It would cost £700 million and take six years to complete.
-
Dredging the estuary bed will make it deeper and would allow larger ships further inland.
-
ABP put through the application to build a new container port.
-
The reclaimed area was made up of sand, mud and gravel .
