Manchester’s Commonwealth games 2002

 

 

• 31 acres of brownfield land was reclaimed and developed through major environmental improvements

• Largest concentration of sporting venues in Europe

• National Velodrome placed the city at the centre of British Cycling and helped lead to Beijing ’08 success

• Facilities such as aquatics centre and national squash centre

• Piccadilly railway station given a £30m facelift, coach station £3.5m and public transport £60m

• Hailed as the best Commonwealth games of all time, attracting £600m investment and £22m tourist spends during the course of the games

 

The games provided positive outcomes:

  • Businesses benefited from a large quantity of visitors at the games

  • The games were used as a catalyst in other regeneration projects i.e. Sports City

  • Catalyst for London bid

  • Trade and employment initatives mean 250 companies have a £22 million turnover

  • 37,000 full time jobs

  • 7% increase in passengers at Manchesters airport

Environmental

  • over 80% of journies were made via public transport saving 860,000 car miles

  • More interest in the city

  • 10,500 volunteers

  • 20,000 employment opportunities
